Support for NDIS shown in important day

Karingal celebrated International Day of People with Disability (IDPWD) by hosting a free barbecue and live music event on Saturday December 3 at The FOrT in Corio. Proudly supported by The City of Greater Geelong, Barwon Water, Encompass, Lions Club (Corio Norlane branch), MatchWorks and Scope, the event focused on supporting the Every Australian Counts Campaign for a National Disability Insurance Scheme.

Chris named top achiever

The Karingal Employee and Achiever of the Year awards were presented at the organisation’s Annual General Meeting last month to give recognition for effort, commitment and success. The Achiever of the Year award was presented to Chris Van Ingen. Karingal Chair Cheryl Graham said Chris was deserving of the award due to his excellent service to Karingal and the wider community on a number of different levels.

Horsing around at Big Night Out

The 2011 Big Night Out was a colourful affair with everyone dressing in their best, or as jockeys and horses, for the night which was themed, At the Races. The more than 650 people who attended gave the race goers at the Melbourne Cup a run for their money in the dress stakes, with everyone looking fabulous as they walked through the rose-draped white picket fences to enter on the big night.

Planning for the future gets underway

Karingal turns 60 in 2012

Next year Karingal will celebrate its 60th year and the organisation is planning a number of activities to commemorate the occasion throughout the year. A new history book about the organisation is now being researched and written for release in 2012. There are also a number of other activities planned, including a gala dinner on March 23 which will not only celebrate the 60 year milestone, but see the Karingal Foundation launched.

Show your support for Melaluka project

Melaluka - a planned $1.5m Karingal building project – will provide 2500 annual nights respite accommodation for up to 300 individuals from across Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula with multiple sclerosis or other disability from the end of April 2012.

Awards to boot from the Geelong Show

An art project and a beautiful poem created by people who attend Participate Central has won them first and second prize at the Geelong Show. The group got an old boot and put their art and craft talents to the test to win first prize in the art category at the show – and their poem came second.

KABLE footy team kicks great goals

Karingal Adventure Based Learning Experience (KABLE) participants were filled with nerves and excited when they joined up with Rec LINK, Barwon Health and the Geelong Salvation Army to start a football team. Many of the guys hadn’t played footy for years, so they trained hard to get fit. The games were played on alternate weeks at venues as far away as Sorrento, Old Collingwood and Carlton.
